The Shining By: Stephen King

Format: Paperback

Rating: 9.5

Review: Stephen King has created a terrifying masterpiece with this novel. I saw that the sequel Doctor’s Sleep had come out, so I decided to pick up The Shining. It wasn’t until about halfway through the book that I realized that I realized it was not written recently, but in fact over 30 years ago! Although it is one of King’s first books to be published, it proves his skill as a writer and what brought him to be famous. The Shining tells the story of Jack Torrance taking the job as caretaker of the Overlook hotel in Colorado with his wife and son for the weekend. His son, Danny, is gifted and has the ability to hear other people’s thoughts as well as be able to speak through his thoughts to a select few. As winter blocks the family into the hotel, strange this happen which ultimately change their lives. I enjoyed this book even though horror is not one of my favourite genres. I suggest this book to anyone over the age of 16 who is looking for a good scare.

The Crown Tower By: Michael J. Sullivan

Format: Paperback

Rating: 9.5

Review: Michael J. Sullivan has done it again! I bought The Crown Tower with a little bit of hesitation because it was a prequel; Don’t hesitate! Buy this book! I started and finished this book within a 24 hour time span, and it’s not even a short book. The Crown Tower tells the story of how Hadrian Blackwater and Royce Melborn met, and the struggles they faced right from the start. This story was interesting throughout, and Sullivan’s marvellous writing style kept the pages turning. This book was written beautifully as a prequel, in the sense that it can easily be read as the first book in the series, but can also read after reading the Riyria Revelations trilogy and still be awesome. I will definitely put aside the time to read Sullivan’s sequel The Rose and the Thorn the next chance I get. To conclude, I suggest this novel to all readers 12 years or over who either have or haven’t read Riyria novels before and enjoy epic fantasy or are trying to get into it.

Assassin’s Apprentice By: Robin Hobb

Format: Paperback

Rating: 8.5

Review: A while back I was given a recommendation by a friend to read this book. It was described as one of the best fantasy books they have read. Although Robin Hobb has created a good novel, it did not live up to the expectations that I had. The story is of a bastard son of a prince who dies early in the novel. As you may have guessed from the title, this boy becomes the apprentice of an assassin, although he has no intention to kill or harm anyone. Hobb’s story is exciting, and has many interesting parts, but it never had that ‘Wow’ factor that will usually draw a reader into the story. The book had some high points, but not enough to make up for the boring and low points throughout. Overall, if you can’t find a fantasy book to read, or you are loaning from a friend, then this is a great book to pick up. I would not suggest paying for it though, unless you have tried and liked other writings by Hobb beforehand.

The Two Towers By: J.R.R. Tolkien

Format: Paperback

Rating: 9

Review: The Two Towers was a fantastic continuation of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The book broke off into different story lines, so the reader could get a full view of everything that was happening. This novel built onto the first book by having more action, and the ability to keep the reader intrigued throughout. Being the second book in the trilogy, The Two Towers succeeded in setting up the storyline for the finale, while also keeping the tale upbeat and interesting on it’s own. This impressed me, for most of the time the middle book in a trilogy is disappointing. In conclusion, I suggest this novel to those who have read the first book in the trilogy, enjoyed it, and are looking for more. I am hoping for great things in the final instalment of this series.

Cold Hard Truth By: Kevin O’ Leary

Format: Paperback

Rating: 9.5

Review: Wow. This book truly surprised me. Of all the business books that I have read and reviewed so far, this one was by far the best. Kevin O’ Leary has a great writing style, which put him ahead of many other books written on business. O’ Leary tells his life story while giving tips for anyone with a business mindset along the way. He has written this book with the same personality he had on t.v, and as I’ve been told by several sources, off t.v. Brutally honest. (Maybe all capitals should be on the ‘Brutally’ part!) I know that some people do not like O’ Leary because of this, but I think it is the character trait that draws me towards him in his writing and on television. Overall, I suggest this book to any readers, young or old, who are interested in business, or just in O’ Leary’s story. I will be reading his other books in the future.

Heir of Novron By: Michael J. Sullivan

Format: Kindle

Rating: 9.7

Review: For the third time in a row, Sullivan’s writing has amazed me. Heir of Novron was the final two books, put into one, of the Riyria Revelations. Sullivan finished this series with a bang! What I love most about his writing is the fact that it is always so exciting or suspenseful that I never get bored. While reading his novel I could not put it down. I will not go into detail about the storyline in this review because it could spoil parts of the earlier books, but I can say that this novel was the best one yet. This series was totally worth spending the time to read, and I am excited to read more of Sullivan’s books in the future. Overall, I suggest this book to anyone who enjoyed the first two books in the series, and I suggest this series to all readers who enjoy fantasy, action and adventure.

Under the Dome By: Stephen King

Format: Paperback

Rating: 10

Review: Under the Dome was an outstanding novel! In an over 1000 page book, I was always entranced, and never wanted to put it down. King, mixing reality with science fiction, has created a masterpiece that other authors could only dream of creating. The book is about a town that gets trapped inside a ‘Dome’. Stuck inside the Dome there are overpowering police, politicians that are out of their mind, and kids who are trying to do the selfless thing and save the day. The book contains everything a reader could wish for with mystery, drama, action, romance, science-fiction, and so much more. The novel is very gruesome, so it is not for the lighthearted. Overall, I suggest this book to anyone who is able to handle mature and gruesome scenes, as well as be able to finish a novel over 1000 pages long.
